Highway 116 runs
through the sleepy town of Sebastopol, world-reknowned for it's
Gravenstien Apples, and winds it's way to the coast via Guernville,
home of jazz and blues festivals as well as some of the regions best
wineries. Once on Highway 1, north or south will take you through some
beautiful country before landing you back where you started.
The original name for
State Highway 101 in California was the Redwood Highway.
A trip up to the Leggett/Garberville area will give ample evidence of
the aptness of the name. Stunning redwoods, majestic rivers and rustic
surroundings showcase some of California's best attributes.
Highway 128 meanders
it's way up the Anderson Valley above Napa, also known for having some
of the world's best wines, through Healdsburg and Cloverdale before
heading west through the northern Anderson Valley, ambling through the
little hamlets of Philo and Booneville (where they have their own,
officially recognized language!) and pokes through the redwood groves
just before meeting Highway 1 and going either north to Mendocino/Fort
Bragg or south toward Bodega and Santa Rosa.
Highway
35, also kn own as Skyline Blvd.
for it's location on top of the coastal mountain range running from
Half Moon Bay to Santa Cruz, is another prime example of what makes
California one of the best places on earth to ride a motorcycle.
Wide-open roads, huge pine trees and redwoods alike, funky little
eateries and gift shops all make the ride to Santa Cruz and Boulder
Creek very pleasant indeed.
Highway 84 is one of
the connector roads between Skyline Blvd. and both the Woodside area
and the Coast Highway 1 south of Half Moon Bay.
Highway
9, running
from Santa Cruz into the mountains toward Highway 35, takes you through
the old logging towns at Big Basin and Boulder Creek. Crystal clear
creeks run alongside the twisting roads and the smells of the redwoods
and fresh air will do wonders for whatever work-borne ailments are
nagging at you.
Highway
20 makes a slow progression from
one of the north's old logging and fishing towns through another
logging town, Willits, before heading down the Redwood Highway to Ukiah
and then winding east through the scenic splendor of the Clear Lake
area where you can take a leisurely run over the hill to Hopland
and back down 101, or cruise over Bottle Rock Road and go back in time
for the ride to Middletown and over to Calistoga and the Napa Valley.
